The Trade Federation: An Empire of Trade

The Trade Federation is one of the galaxy's largest government factions, with over 200 billion citizens. The Federation, which initially gained galactic prominence as a trading conglomerate, was built on the foundations of honor, integrity and profit. It has always maintained those foundations, striving to hold its members to the lofty goals that come with such a motto. Because of this, the Federation is still steeped in its commercial roots, delivering basic and luxury goods to billions of clients galaxy-wide and generating prosperity for its citizens in dozens of star systems.

History

Early Days

Caritas and Filordi Co-founded the Trade Federation

The origins of the Trade Faderation have been obscured by the many years since its foundation, but it is generally held that the Neimoidians joined with several other races in creating a cooperative trading endeavor spanning several planets. Most historians believe the Federation was probably a Neimoidian idea, as that race assumed leadership of the Federation throughout its whole first era. The Caritas and Filordi races were among the earliest recorded sentient species to join the fledgling Trade Federation.

As the Trade Federation grew in power and scope, its leadership became synonymous with that of the planet Neimoidia, and the Federaion's leadership position was merged with the royal rulership of Neimoidia. Ultimately, the Federation's ties to Neimoidia were downplayed as the Federation took on the governing of more planets, and rule of Neimoidia was devolved to a Federation-appointed governor. The last vestige of the royal connection between the Trade Federation and Neimoidia is the retention of the title Viceroy for the highest-ranking Federation executive.

The adoption of an aggressive expansionist policy led to a period of rapid annexation to the Federation of neighboring planets, hyperspace routes and star systems. The Federation had a reputation throughout this period for using strong-arm tactics to brow-beat local governemnts and populations into submission to Federation rule. As the Federation took on more and more of the daily governemtnal administration of these territories, it gained enough political sway to receive a seat in the Senate of the Old Republic.

Much of the Trade Federation's early success can be attributed to its brilliant droid manufacture. Droids were designed for heavy lifting, piloting, and finally for military application. Trade Fedeartion inventors and researchers applied thier current technologies to many other ares, creating profitable automated spy drones and starfighters, as well as complicated systems to automate the deployment of battle droids. With these innovations, the Federation was able to automate many aspects of its operations, cutting back on overhead costs and maximizing profits.

The Golden Age and Expansion

Three hundred and fifty years before the cold-blooded Galactic Empire emerged, the Old Republic had long passed it’s fullest and more prosperous days. It was now a chaotic government, caught in bureaucratic procedures and with thousands of worlds to control, it was now becoming unbalanced by the huge needs of its members and their constantly growing commercial needs. It was then that immense planet-based companies appeared and saved the dying company. By loaning money to the Republic they helped the galactic economy become stable again, at least for a little while.

But all of these advantages came with a considerable price. These companies gained political power and some of them were given priority over any other member of the Republic.

Lucrehulk Battleship
The Trade Federation was one of these favorites. Many systems were already under its control, and even more were added because of the Federation's contributions to the Republic political machine. The main reason for these rewards was that even from the beginning, the Federation searched to establish trade routes between the wealthiest planets. Despite this, the Federation was also interested in expanding its own borders. Therefore the Federation searched for new trade routes, expanding their commercial projects to far and exotic planets. The company funded several new trade stations all across the Outer Rim, where no other company had even come close to becoming established. Spaceports were now found in long-forgotten worlds, like Dantooine and Wayland.

After that, the Federation kept growing and expanding. Several business partners like the Commerce Guild and Techno Union were suddenly more involved in the business, and they even stood together for defending their economic pursuits before the Senate. The Trade Federation was soon known throughout the entire Galaxy.

However, being such a big company brings some problems. Corruption was also on the rise, and sometimes economic power is just not enough to keep a government together. From time to time, a witty client had the amazing idea to break their contract with the company. The Federation often used diplomatic methods, but even if these weren’t effective, some other means were often used to "persuade" the client. At other times the Federation accepted payments to treat certain clients in “a special way”.

Collapse and Disgrace

The Federation was not the only victim of corruption. The Republic had come to be a massive system of paperwork and bureaucratic methods. Diplomatic action took more and more time. Planets started to have disputes and problems cropped up in many sectors. Pirates appeared all across the galaxy, attacking convoys and stealing the Federation's precious cargo. The Federation came before the Senate, saying that if the Republic was not able to solve their problems, they would create their own army. Their proposal was accepted (some suspected through coercion and bribes), and the droids used previously only as common employees were now replaced with deadlier, more intelligent automates.

The Republic searched for an answer for their dire economic situation. They implemented every possible kind of tax. Unfortunately, one of them was a restriction of the trade routes the Federation used. The Federation and its partners loudly protested the restrictions, but they were now ignored by Senators worried about reelection. The Executive Council decided to blockade a planet with a Senate seat in a public protest aa well as an attempt to persuade the planet's Senators to vote for the Federation's cause of lifting the restrictions. They chose the small planet of Naboo. The blockade was a success: with supplies unable to enter or leave the planet, the small government soon fell.

The blockade was futile, however. The Federation did not realize that a plot was been unveiled back in Couruscant, and the Galactic Empire was born at that time. The Empire, afraid of the economic power of the Federation, seized most of the company’s assets. The Federation army was destroyed, and their money was now part of the tyrannical government's treasury. The company was once again reduced to a small transporting business.

Government

The Trade Federation has always been ruled by a Viceroy, who acts as the Head of State. The Viceroy rules out of the Trade Federation Palace on Vinsoth or the mobile command ship, the Lucrehulk 3210 Battleship TFF Prosperity. While the Viceroy handles the State, the Duceroy is the Head of Government administrating the day to day operations of the Trade Federation. The Duceroy is considered the second in Command of the Trade Federation who's responsibilities wildly depend on the preference of the Viceroy.

Bellow the Roy's, a term used for the Viceroy and Duceroy, is the Cabinet. The Cabinet is made up of the Viceroy, Duceroy and Ministers of the Trade Federation. The Cabinets official role is to advise the Viceroy, however much is brought to the Cabinet for a unanimous decision. To reach the Cabinet is above what any officer can reasonably hope to achieve in their career, and is -- for all practical intents & purposes -- the highest any member can achieve.

The Directorate is made up of all the Directors within the Trade Federation. Its purpose is to advise the Cabinet and form the backbone of Trade Federation Leadership.

Politics

The Trade Federation is sometimes referred to as a Constitutional Monarchy, but power has and will most likely always will remain in the hands of the Viceroy who still holds absolute authority over the State. The Trade Federation was formed as a powerful trading faction, very worthy of its name. As such, power within the Federation always resided in the Cabinet and not the Military who at the formation, was not very powerful. The Federation's position on galactic affairs was to not get involved all the while making huge sums of credits on anything the Cabinet could get their hands on.

In regards to the Galactic Civil War between the Galactic Empire and the Rebels, the Federation had a solid neutral stance. However, as time went by the Federation started to grow too quickly. Its political strength started to clash with both sides of the civil war pushing the Viceroy to a crossroad. The decision was made and for the first time the Trade Federation allied on the Imperial side of the civil war joining the Imperial Union.

Technology

The Trade Federation takes great pride in its technological achievements. Over the span of many years the Trade Federation has been able to design and produce technologically advanced capital ships, ground vehicles and many different types of droids. The most famous of them all would be the massive Lucrehulk 3210 Battleship, who still stands alone as the best heavy hauler in the galaxy. Other advancements include the C-9979 Landing Ship, Pnath-class Shuttle, XS.009 Scarab, Armoured Attack Tank, Single Troop Aerial Platform, Battle Droid, Destroyer Droid, Super Battle Droid and the E-5 Droid Blaster.

Structure

Cabinet

The Trade Federation Cabinet is made up of the Viceroy, Regent, Duceroy and Ministers of the Trade Federation. Consisting of 7 members, the Cabinet is the decision-making body of the Trade Federation. The Cabinets official role is to advise the Viceroy, however much is brought to the Cabinet for a unanimous decision.
