The barren and cold planet Braldadyn is the source of the Terakil viral infection that still spreads to this day throughout the poorer ports of the galaxy. The virus is actually a biological organism that originated from this planet when the local Gran inhabitants first discovered it. This organism infects through the airways of any oxygen-breathing life form and spreads from there to infest in the vocal cords and spinal stems, causing loss or distortion of voice and sometimes paralyzation. The infection is today fairly easy to treat, but when it was first discovered it killed thousands of Gran permanently leaving many Gran with scarred vocal cords and spinal nerve damage. The Gran took the only measures they could at the time and used several hundred primitive explosive devices to devastate the once near-temperate climate of Braldadyn. This of course did nothing to stop the destruction of the virus as it slowly spread through the galaxy killing millions and leaving many more scarred for life.

The Human scientist Megaan Trix'l eventually found a cure. After extensive research on the subject she developed a cure by synthesizing certain natural resistant cell types found in the Abyssin race, which was found to be immune to the attacks of the organism. This synthesized cure was found to be extremely expensive to reproduce although, and while it has spared a large part of society from this horrible and destructive virus many poorer planets still cannot afford to import it from the planets with suitable medical facilities.

Because of recent advances in medical technology there is only a 28% average death rate among people who contract the virus, many however still end up either voiceless or paralyzed. 12% of those who contract the virus will survive with only minor vocal or spinal damage.
