The gas giant Barawen is the only gas giant in the Kinyen System, and because of this has become very important to the Gran who inhabit this system. The importance is based on the heavy amount Tibanna Gas pockets that can be found throughout the many layers of clouds on Barawen, which cannot be found anywhere else in the Kinyen System.

The planet has become a sort of necessary evil in Gran society as well, because of the long time Gran workers have to be away from their extended families. Still for the Kinyen System, and the Gran who inhabit it, the Tibanna Gas pockets are vital if they ever wish to stay unmolested by the growing powers of the major forces in the galaxy. Many delegates in the local Gran government are of the opinion of hiring off-worlder companies to run the Tibanna Gas mines, thus keeping an important part of their economy working, while allaying some of the societal problems. Many companies are currently considering the possibility, but due to the current governments division on the subject it is not known when, if ever, they will accept the idea.

Ever since the Gran developed space flight nearly 1,000 years ago, they have traveled at length within their home system, bringing home extensive knowledge of each planet. And because of the long time these planets have been in Gran society, each has gained a place in Gran society. Barawen takes its name from the Gran word bara, which means away, and wen, which means from. Thus when a Gran leaves his home to work in the Tibanna Gas mines on Barawen they say to their family that they are going away from them.
