Description
A Barabel, his dark scales bluntly reflect light and his slitted eyes keenly dart around the room, always evaluating those around him. The tip of his tail slips out of the bottom of his long black cloak, which is made of a fairly basic material with only meager Trade Federation designs in a light red and blue. His claws click slightly as he is determining his next course of action.
Early Life and Coming to Join the Trade Federation
Nereus grew up, like all Barabels, on Barab I living the life of a predator. He and his clan would hunt every evening, and following tradition, would give their largest prey that evening to an opposing clan. Nereus was never an extraordinary hunter, but always wanted to catch the most dangerous, most impressive prey to bring honor to his clan. His clan excelled and it seemed almost every week, they were presenting the best carcass.
The Barabels, amazed and aweful of their previous experience with Jedis, forever trusted and revered them. That is why when a group of Jedi Knights arrived at Barab I, Nereus along with the others took great interest. They were quickly brought to the Neutral Jedi Zone where clan members often fought to solve greivances or challenges to authority. The Jedi were asked, almost demanded, to use their wisdom to mediate the most recent conflicts between Barabels as they had done many times in the past.
Seeing the Jedis' great wisdom in these matters, Nereus himself became filled with awe for the Jedi. He suddenly felt drawn to them, he knew their power, their great wisdom and knew his future must be with them. He quickly went to Alater-ka, the spaceport built by the Empire on their planet to facilitate off-worlders, and found where their ship was docked. Nereus found a cargo case and dragged it towards the small freighter, when the docking hands were not looking, he stuffed himself into the case and closed the lid.
He lay in there for several hours before the Jedi returned, obviously getting what they had needed. He listened as a cargo loader spoke to them, "Is that your cargo case you want loaded on your vessel? I noticed it there but hadn't recieved any orders to load it." Nereus heart seemed to stop and began to panic, he knew these Jedis had great mind powers and was sure they could sense him in the case. He had hoped the cargo hand would load it with no questions asked, but now the Jedis would discover him before he could get on their ship.
"Yes, please load it" came the reply from the Jedis after a short pause. A big grin, exposing his rows of pointy teeth to the darkness in the case came onto Nereus' face. He had tricked the Jedi and would be able to travel with them now! But as soon as the ship began to take flight, the lid of the cargo case was suddenly flung open and a Jedi smiling knowingly asked "Now, why were you trying to get on our ship, my Barabel friend?" Nereus quickly climbed out of the case and in the rough basic he had learned in the space port tried to explain, to lie, anything to get the Jedi to let him stay, "You...*grunt*...Jedi...respect...*grunt*...stay". The Jedi smiled and calmly said, "Its ok, I can understand your native tongue. But I can sense why you have come. You wish to travel with the Jedi that you respect, do you not"
Nereus nodded, anxiously looking around the inside of the cargo bay. He had seen these ships come from beyond the clouds before, but he had never entered one. The metal all around him made him nervous. The Jedi replied, "Well, you shall have your wish, I can sense your good intentions, we are on our way to mediate another conflict, you may accompany us on this". Nereus was happy, and for the rest of the trip, he spoke with the Jedi, who all seemed able to understand his language, about his life on Barab I and the rest of the galaxy. After about a week in hyperspace, they announced they had arrived at the location of the arbitration. Nereus was nervous as the approached a large ring-shaped vessel. He followed them uneasily down the boarding ramp and through the hallways, passing skeleton-like droids and odd looking creatures.
Finally the droid leading them took them into a room where 4 sentients were waiting. Two looked like wrinkled Crackels, a prey Nereus anjoyed hunting on Barab I. The others seemed to be humans. They seemed to ba having a conflict as they were yelling loudly, and Nereus wondered why they had not begun physically fighting to determine the outcome yet. The wrinkly ones nodded to the Jedi as they entered and introcuded themselves as the Viceroy and Magistrate of the Trade Federation. Nereus felt out of place as the Jedis passed over him during introductions. The humans were representatives from a local planet. During the negotiations, Nereus-although curious as to the lack of physical violence- admired the Trade Federation's zealous and agressive tactics. They strong-armed the humans into their own ideas, and only the Jedi kept them from imposing their will on the weak humans.
Although the Jedis ensured the negotiations were fair, in Nereus' mind, the wrinkly ones had clearly won the negotiations; and he admired their ruthlessness. Nereus then knew that he wanted to stay with these wrinkly ones and learn about their tactics and learn their business. Recieving permission from the Jedi, he was left on the large ship with the wrinkly ones, who began to question him to learn how much training he needed. He quickly learned in the business world, open violence is not accpetable. But the Wrinkly ones made a clear point, that underground violence and strong-arm tactics were frequently used in the Trade Federation, which pleased Nereus greatly. His training began.
Thoughts on the Trade Federation (holo-recording)
"I was accepted and even though I had no idea how to fly a ship, act presentably, or even dress properly, the Trade Federation accepted me to their ranks. A Director quickly took me under his wings, assigned me my own ship to fly, and taught me the ways of the galaxy. I was soon to become a respectable Barabel in the ranks of the best sentients in the galaxy.
I was immediately surprised by the large amount of money that I was able to earn initially, and also how well I was compensated for my hard work and dedication. I soon began to become learned in many departments, I now work in trading, diplomacy, and logistics.
Even now, as more members continue to join, the Trade Federation ensures a "family-feel" atmosphere amongst its members, with current trips to bars and contests to ensure fun and funds for all.
When the Trade Federation accepted me, I was a sad little Barabel without a friend in the world, but thanks to them, I now have a future, and a bright one. I encourage all peoples, of any race or age, to apply for employment at the Trade Federation, we have a position for everyone, no matter what your fancy might be: anything from diplomacy to security."
